FIFD Auto Extrication Drill

The Fishers Island Fire Department (FIFD) emergency responders including firefighters and EMTs had an important drill on the evening of Tuesday, March 28th. Under the direction of Paramedic Porfirio ‘Rod’ Rodriguez and EMT Critical Care trainer Audrey Wigley the members executed an Auto Extrication. The firefighters were trained further on new battery powered Holmatro equipment enabling them to dismantle a vehicle to rescue passengers and the EMTs practiced stabilizing a trapped passenger and then removing them from the vehicle.

Our volunteer members went to work on a donated vehicle, first making it possible to extract the driver and then the passenger. This training is important in any community and practicing enables the emergency responders to act quickly in a real-life situation. The EMTs were also evaluated on their performance through video conferencing, part of their certification renewal.

The Fishers Island Fire Department would like to thank the donors who made it possible to purchase the new Holmatro extrication equipment. This includes the cutter, the combination tool which is a cutter and a spreader, and the telescoping ram. And, the FIFD thanks the David McCall family for the donation of the truck.

Monthly drills are part of the training for the FIFD members who volunteer in various roles including firefighter, EMT, and Sea Stretcher captain and navigator.
