Island Evacuation Drill October 2, 2024

The FIFD is inviting islanders who would like to volunteer to participate in an Emergency Evacuation Drill with personnel from FEMA, Millstone, NY DEM, CT DEMHS, CT REP, and other NY and CT emergency responders. The Fishers Island Fire Department’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will hold this Evac drill on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

If you would like to volunteer for the drill, you must RSVP by noon on Thursday, September 26. This deadline allows Millstone to make arrangements and complete an attendees list.

This evacuation drill occurs every ten years or so in the event of a catastrophic hazard at the Dominion Energy Millstone Power Station in Waterford, CT. It involves evacuating island residents and visitors and taking them via a Fishers Island Ferry to Stonington, CT, for further transportation out of harm’s way. During the drill, the emergency responders can evaluate various circumstances and scenarios and show participants what might happen in a real situation.

Emergency personnel and island volunteers must check in at the Fishers Island Ferry dock at 9:50 AM. The boat will depart Fishers Island at 10:00 AM for Stonington, CT. Island volunteers may bring their dogs, but they must be on a leash at all times. Some time will be spent in Stonington before returning to Silver Eel Cove. Lunch will be served on board the return trip to Fishers, with an expected arrival by 2:30/3:00.

Please RSVP as soon as possible to John Bergquist or Rod Rodriguez using their contact information below. They can also answer any questions you may have.
